The Power of Belief

One of the things I teach my clients when we get started is the importance of getting off to a great start. Notice I said great and not good. The reason that this is so important in the beginning is because we are building a new belief system about their program and also about themselves.

Most of my clients are attempting to decrease their body weight as their primary goal. If they are like most people, they have probably tried this multiple times before and “failed” or, if they succeeded, the results didn’t last. These experiences begin to manifest in the mind as a belief system about fitness and weight loss that we must begin to deconstruct in order to get the results we want.

These experiences begin to manifest in the mind as a belief system about fitness and weight loss that we must begin to deconstruct in order to get the results we want.

When I got a dog a while back, we had to buy her a harness to lock her in the back seat. She kept jumping over the console into the front seat when we were driving. After a couple of weeks in the harness that locked her in, she formed a belief system about what riding in the back seat meant.

She began to believe that no matter what she did or how hard she tried or what she did, she couldn’t jump into the front seat any more. Eventually we stopped using the harness. At any moment she could have jumped over into one of our laps… But she never even tried.

This is known as “learned helplessness” in psychology, and a similar belief about fitness and weight loss is experienced by many of my clients when we begin working with each other

This is known as “learned helplessness” in psychology, and a similar belief about fitness and weight loss is experienced by many of my clients when we begin working with each other. Just like my puppy dog who had given up trying to jump over the console into the front seat, many people have given up the dream of ever being physically fit.

This is the reason we must power through the first week with every ounce of energy we have. Because once the mind sees the results, it starts to deconstruct the old belief system and build a new one. The brain begins to question their current model of the situation and say “Hey, wait a minute, if I lost 2 lbs this week, all I have to do is continue this pace for the next year and I will loose 100 lbs!!!” Now we are gaining momentum!!!

But it all starts with taking action and having the courage to believe the results you are seeking are possible!
